ADHD & Guilt
Forgotten messages, missed plans, unfinished tasks… guilt can quietly pile up. This page gently explores why guilt may feel so heavy for some of us with ADHD, and kind, practical ways to set some of it down.
Different minds. Brilliant possibilities.
The Weight of Guilt
Guilt is the feeling that we have done something wrong, or not done something we should have. Sometimes it is useful. It can nudge us to apologise, put things right or notice what matters to us.
Useful responsibility says, “I can learn from this.” Excessive self-blame says, “I always get it wrong.” For some of us, guilt can grow far bigger than the moment that caused it.

Everyday examples
Not replying to a message for days
Running late again
Leaving tasks unfinished
Feeling guilty for resting
Worrying after saying no
Not everyone experiences guilt in the same way. These are everyday examples, not a checklist of symptoms.
Practical Strategies
Gentle ideas that may help when guilt feels heavy. Try what feels right for you and leave what doesn’t.
💗 Separate responsibility from self-blame
Ask, “What part of this is mine to own?” Taking responsibility for an action is different from deciding you are a bad person.
🦋 Make amends kindly
A simple apology and a small, realistic plan to put things right can ease guilt more than replaying the moment over and over.
🧠 Understand your challenges
Noticing how things like forgetfulness or time blindness may affect you can turn “I always fail” into “This is something I can plan around.”
⭐ Use compassionate language
Speak to yourself as you would to a good friend. Swap “I’m hopeless” for “I made a mistake, and I’m learning.”
🌈 Recognise your limits
Saying yes to less is not failure. Setting realistic expectations can reduce the guilt that comes from overcommitting.
A gentle pause ✨
Guilt Check-In
Take a quiet moment. There are no right or wrong answers here – just space to notice what you are carrying.
- What am I feeling guilty about today?
- Is this guilt pointing to something I can gently put right, or is it an old feeling that no longer fits?
- What would I say to a friend in the same situation?
- What is one kind, realistic step I could take next?
Laura's reflection 💜
“For a long time, I carried guilt for things I forgot, things I left unfinished and the times I needed to rest. I am learning that guilt can be a sign that I care – but it does not have to become a measure of my worth.”
A supportive reminder: Mistakes do not cancel out your care. Rest is not something you have to earn. You are worthy of kindness – including your own.
